Yukiko did not get to live a normal life growing up in Japan. Her family was an ancient samurai family, held to proud customs and traditions that many modern families had long since disregarded as old-fashioned. As a small child, she was taught the ancient songs and stories that have long since been forgotten by most modern day children. She would spend hours studying, learning the characters, learning the music and the words. When she was old enough, she was taught to write in the beautiful ancient calligraphy on both cloth and parchment, using an old quill and everything.
When she was nine, her mother began to train her in the ancient art of dance. She learned the old techniques, dancing both in a kimono and with a fan. By the time she was twelve, it was more customary for someone of her age to attend a regular school. Rather than sending her to the local school, however, her parents paid for a private education. They asked another ancient samurai family's son to help keep an eye on Yukiko and to report anything out of the ordinary to them, unbeknownst to Yukiko this entire time.
She was a normal middle school girl for the most part, though many looked upon her as an outcast because she wasn't as social as the rest of the girls. She wasn't interested in dating and she wasn't openly expressing interest in any boy that they came across. Inwardly, however, Yukiko was jealous of them. She saw how carefree they lived and had a strong desire to be part of their circles, though she knew her father would be livid if it were ever discovered. So she kept her secrets to herself, kept her head down as a good student, and a proper daughter. She was, after all, the only heir so far to the Kuroda family. Their name, their ancient ancestral name, died with her, unless if by some miracle her mother had a son to continue on the traditional name.
It was in her third year of high school that this miracle happened. A boy was born. Her mother, thirty five years of age, had a son. It wasn't unheard of for a woman of her elder age to give birth to a child, but it was fairly rare. It was far more typical to have a child at twenty or twenty five rather than at thirty five. This boy was her father's pride and joy. From an early age, he was trained as a samurai, though the practice is well out of date by this time. The head of the Kuroda family did not want their family's tradition to completely die out. He'd even named the boy Ichiro, first born son. Ichiro became Kuroda's pride and joy. They spared no expenses for him.
Yukiko was jealous, though she had been well-trained by this point to keep her emotions and feelings in check. She understood that it was not her place to speak up, that she was now the forgotten first child who would be married off to some wealthy family either of nobility or another samurai family. Ichiro was sent to a private elite boarding school and the plans that the family had to send Yukiko off to a good junior college diminished immediately. Though the child was only five, the Kuroda's wanted their son to have the best education.
And so the sibling rivalry, unbeknownst to Ichiro, began. Yukiko strived to be better than her brother. The quiet, well-behaved daughter suddenly let her emotions shine through. She stopped wearing her long hair in a braid, letting it flow down her back near to her waist. She stopped wearing the traditional clothing. She wanted to be heard, not just looked at as the pretty daughter who'd been obedient in everything. Her mother had warned her, when signs of the changes in her behavior had first started, that her father would be livid. She knew, but she'd made her choice. The precious daughter was tired of being just glanced at.
She made her own school choice for junior college, something that her father frowned upon, but glanced over as Ichiro was soon entering middle school, an important time in a young man's life. Yukiko earned the top position at her school, beating even the boys much to her parents' dismay. It was okay for a girl to be near the top, but to outshine the boys meant that it was highly unlikely they'd find a suitable marriage partner. She openly joined a kendo team, using her training to help her excel. She made friends, many of whom were startled at the changes they saw in the originally quiet, reserved Yukiko.
And she finished junior college at the top of her class. She even earned a place in the top five percent nationwide for the university placement exams. So she chose her own university, her own future. She had a keen interest in detective work, and was very skilled with profiling. All the years she'd been the quiet obedient daughter had taught her how to read people very well. After finishing near the top of her class at university, Yukiko pursued an intern position at the police force. Her skills as a profiler helped her to earn enough money to make the move halfway across the world to America.
Her parents disliked her choice. She was part of a proud, samurai family and she should continue to uphold the traditions regardless of what she wanted or needed. Ichiro would be the yin and she would be the yang. However, Yukiko knew she could do great things. She had an intellect, a sharp and stunning mind that outmaneuvered many criminals even while she was still studying.
After three years of working for the police force in Japan, Yukiko began to research opportunities overseas. She discovered the opportunity of studying a specific area of criminals in the United States. Deciding to apply to the UNLV Master's program for criminal justice, Yukiko made the move to the States. She had work experience, she had intelligence, and now she was on her way to becoming her own unique person. And here, in the United States, hopefully very few would recognize the last name of Kuroda. Hopefully, she could be free to be herself, rather than the daughter of the Kuroda family. Las Vegas was a new start for Yukiko.
And that's when she started to hear the voice in her mind, upon arriving in Las Vegas. During one of her law classes, she heard the voice of a young man speaking in her mind. She was terrified at first. A voice in her head? Surely she must be crazy. But he was gentle, sweet even. He told her it wasn't so bad to have a family that cared so much for her, and that he was a bit jealous. She doesn't know much about the voice inside of her head so far, having only been in Las Vegas a week, but she knows he's interesting enough and she's patient enough to try to learn more about him.
Alter: (Give us a quick background of the Alter and their source in two paragraphs. How does the Alter feel about the situation? Are the character and Alter in conflict with each other? If your Alter does not have a canonical history, tell us what history you’ve created for them. Wow us with a deep understanding of the source and their world.)
Inside of Yukiko's mind resides Harry Potter, the infamous boy wizard that changed the world. The Boy Who Lived. Most of us know Harry's story. The child who survived being killed as a baby, who survived with only a lightning bolt scar as a reminder of the night that cost him his parents. The boy who lived as a Muggle, where his aunt and uncle mistreated him severely because he wasn't theirs and because he was "different".
The boy who learned on his way to Hogwarts that he was a wizard destined for great things. Harry made fast friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and the trio aided the boy wonder in eventually destroying the darkest wizard that had ever lived. That is, in a nutshell, Harry's story. When he finds out that he's inside of a Japanese girl's mind, however, Harry doesn't trust her the first week. After all, writing in a journal that spoke and listened to her had nearly gotten Ginny Weasley killed by Voldemort. It will take some time before Harry openly writes anything, but he does communicate with the girl.
His own mental abilities gives him the talent to mentally speak with her, reassuring himself that she isn't some Voldemort incarnate trying to use him to take over the world. As he learns more about Yukiko, Harry's both jealous and worried for her. Jealous that she has a family that clearly cared a lot about her, and worried that she left them all behind. He appreciates her resolve and her determination, however, telling himself that she'd probably be a Slytherin if she went to Hogwarts.
Harry himself comes from after Book 7: The Deathly Hallows. It's been one year since the end of the war. Harry has been working to gather his wits and courage to ask Ginny to officially marry him.
Journal/Key: (What does your character/Alter's journal and key look like? Very brief, 2-3 sentences.)
The journal is a leather-bound book with gold trimming. The key appears to be a small sword, a tiny representation of the Sword of Gryffindor.
(Three storylines that can be filled by other characters in play. These can be open storylines for characters or for Alters. For example, your character can have a storyline for their biological sister or for their Alter’s spouse. Must be open upon character’s introduction into the game, not pre-filled!)
Open: Ronald Weasley or Hermione Granger. Basically, Harry would love to see his best mates in game.
Open: Kuroda Ichiro. Yukiko would be astonished if her brother made the move to Las Vegas, probably looking for her or something similar.
Open: Coworkers, FBI force. Yukiko wouldn't mind her fellow FBI detectives.
(Please give an example of at least two paragraphs. Introduce both character and Alter in one short piece. This is your chance to really show us how your character lives and breathes in the world, and how you have captured or interpreted the source Alter. Make us want to read more of what you’re writing! Existing players do not need to provide writing samples.)
